Wedevåg Mansion, a gem in Bergslagen

The place where there is no shortage of either ghosts or chandeliers.

We stumbled upon this amazing place by accident. We had planned a weekend in Stockholm and wanted to find something nice on the way home. We looked at Google Maps and our eyes landed on the small community of Vedevåg and Wedevåg manor house. The mansion had received rave reviews so we decided to give it a try. It turned out to be a real winner.

Wedevåg Manor is a small gem in the centre of Bergslagen just outside Lindesberg. The mansion dates back as far as the 1500s when Wedevåg's mill was established. The current mansion was built sometime in the mid-18th century but has been rebuilt and renovated in stages since then. A few years ago, the Maglić family took over the farm and they have really transformed the manor into a magical place. Perhaps they are also helped by Tekla, who haunts the place at night. Tekla was the last manager's wife and lived here until her death in 1914. She ruled the manor with an iron fist and refused to accept the modernities installed in the house. If she wanted to get hold of the servants, she did not use the modern clock on the wall. Instead, she hit her cane hard on the floor and it is said that you can still hear the thump of the cane at night. To keep Tekla happy, she has her permanent place set at the high seat in the dining room. The seat is set with the menu from her daughter's wedding at the turn of the last century.

The mansion has been carefully renovated and the rooms are beautiful and personally decorated. In the picture at the top you can see our beautiful room and the rest of the mansion is in the same style, here they have not saved on either gold or crystal chandeliers. Here and there you will find curiosities from the manor's history that the current owners have collected. Recently they received a couple of hundred plates found down at the mill. Since the plates had the manor's emblem on them, it seemed obvious that they should be returned.

We checked in already in the afternoon and took the opportunity to look around for a while before dinner. The mansion is not very big but has a number of lounges and a library where you can have a drink or why not play billiards or a board game. If you want to get out in the fresh air, you can do a workout in the outdoor gym or take a dip in the whirlpool. There's something for everyone.

At 18 o'clock we went into the dining room, hungry and ready for supper. The dining room was beautifully decorated and we were seated at the long table where Tekla was also seated. We were asked to honour the manager's wife with a toast now and then, so of course we did. We did not want her to ghost for us. 🙂

For dinner, a three-course supper was served with an accompanying wine package. We started with a rich pumpkin soup that warmed up well on a cold winter evening. The main course was venison fillet with potato puree and a sauce with chanterelles. The highlight for a chocolate lover like me was the chocolate fondant with crème fraiche.

After a good night's sleep undisturbed by Tekla's possible haunting, it was time for the next highlight, breakfast. We had read that the mansion had won a prize in an international competition, Petit Déjeuner Gourmand, for its breakfast. It sounded very promising. Normally, I appreciate a good breakfast buffet where you can pick a little bit of everything. The disadvantage is that it can be a bit stressful. Here, breakfast was served at the table instead, but I missed absolutely nothing. Everything was beautifully presented and the coffee was served in a nice silver pot. Just when we finished eating the good bread and all the toppings, a plate of freshly baked croissants appeared. It was a cosy breakfast in a calm and harmonious environment and I did not miss the running at the buffet table.

After this award-winning breakfast, we realised that this little gem, which we stumbled upon mostly by chance, was really a stroke of luck. Wedevåg Manor is a place with extra everything when it comes to gold, velvet and crystal chandeliers but they have managed to create a harmonious atmosphere. The personal welcome and friendly service make you feel like a king.
