After a few days in Mumbai<\/a> we took the flight to Jaipur, located in the Rajasthan region just north of Mumbai. Jaipur is by Indian standards a slightly smaller city with \"only\" just over 3 million inhabitants and best known for all its beautiful castles and temples, as well as for its arts and crafts. We spent four days here before moving on to Udaipur. The first day we celebrated Henry's birthday with a balloon ride and a luxury restaurant. A real highlight day that you can read about here<\/a>. Jaipur is also called the Pink City because in 1876 it was painted pink to welcome the then Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, to the city. Why did the choice of color fall on pink? The official description is that pink is the color of hospitality and welcome, while the unofficial explanation is that it was simply the color one happened to have in sufficient quantity at the time of the royal visit. It is unclear which of these two descriptions is the correct one, it was effective in any case. Inside the old town you will find what is perhaps most associated with Jaipur, the Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of the Winds.
