Mining at Ekenäs

Peace and quiet, not a red flag as far as the eye can see.

Happy May, welcome to our village again!

This year it was also the first of May and we therefore went to Ekenäs for a traditional May Day. After an unusually cold spring, it was really nice that the sun came out just when we were going out for a walk.

Ekenäs is located at the far end of Värmlandsnäs and offers beautiful nature and two climate zones, harvest festival, culture barn and also a nice restaurant with beautiful views. If you have a little more time, you can take boat shuttles out to Lurö but there will be more in a separate post.

Around the Ekenäs headland there are a few different leather which together form a circuit of approx. 6 km of very easy walking. Along the way there are several beautiful viewpoints and a swimming area. For the more dedicated hiker we can also mention Western Värmland pilgrimage trail which starts at Lurö, passes Ekenäs and then all the way to Nidaros (Trondheim). The part of the trail that stretches between Ekenäs and Säffle is approx. 5.7 miles.

Ekenäs also has a small guest harbour with a café, as well as a campsite with a brand new and pleasant restaurant. Restaurant Ekenäs has a large terrace overlooking Lake Vänern, which in combination with good service provides a peaceful and pleasant experience. As it was the first day of the season, they had a slightly more limited menu but we still managed to find something that suited us both. They also announced that they will have a much larger prawn sandwich for the rest of the season... 😉

As a curiosity, the road in the picture below is located near Ekenäs. The old sailor Sven Ottersten emigrated to the USA and started a company there which, before he sold it, was one of the country's largest electrical wholesalers. On a visit to his hometown, he saw the deplorable state of the road and donated $1 million to restore it. In honour of this gift, the road was named Dollar Road.

A pleasant day trip by the water that suits everyone. You'll find good food and beautiful scenery in a welcoming and unpretentious environment.
